A Simple guide to ordering uniform or workwear

Ordering uniform or workwear can be daunting especially if it’s bespoke and can’t be returned if it’s not as expected. We have put together this simple guide to help you feel confident and to ensure your order runs smoothly.

Before you approach suppliers, you will need certain information ready, this also helps if you are getting several quotes and makes sure you are comparing like for like.

Information that your uniform or workwear supplier will need to produce a quote

Type of clothing – You will need to have an idea of the types of uniform you want such as polos shirts, hoodies, jackets and blouses. Is there any particular fit/ look you want such as relaxed and oversized versus corporate and fitted.
Colour – What colour do you want the clothing to be in. If you have a specific brand Pantone, the supplier may be able to match this to stock items. You will need a backup if this is not possible.
Logos – Decide what you would like on the uniform, a logo, text, people’s names etc?
Position – where do you want the logos to be, left breast, back, sleeve.
Numbers – your supplier shouldn’t need to know sizing in order quote, but they will need to know rough quantities.
Quality – It is useful to give an indication of the quality you are looking for. For example, if you are looking for t shirts that you will be giving away at an event, you may be looking for a cheaper lower quality item. If you are sourcing uniform for your sales staff who are visiting customers, then you may want a more premium garment.

Before you contact any uniform or workwear suppliers, make sure that you have clear artwork you can send. If you are planning to brand your uniform with print, then the supplier will need a vectorised artwork file before they can go ahead with production.

Contact your supplier

Once you have collected this information you are ready to contact suppliers. They should be able to offer advice on placement of logos. They can also help you choose between print or embroidery, as they will have all the information to do this.

Once you have the quote and you decide to go ahead, make sure you double check all the information is correct. You should be able to ask for a mock up or print proof so you can confirm the details are correct. Make sure to carefully check spellings!!

How do we brand your uniform?

It can be nerve racking ordering something new when it’s bespoke and knowing that when it arrives you can’t change it. Particularly when you are ordering it for work and maybe spending a lot of money.

At Impact Trading and Cotton Roots, we appreciate that you want the reassurance that you are going to get exactly what you expect when you order. This is why we have processes that enable you to see everything before we brand your uniform.

Clothing Samples

Whether it be an off the shelf garment or a bespoke item. We can supply you with a sample, or a colour swatch so you know exactly what to expect.

For stock uniform we can send you the samples of the clothing you want to order for you to try on and check for style and quality. We can also send various sizes so you can make sure everyone gets the correct fit. If you are ordering clothing which is Pantone matched to your brand colour, we can send out colour swatches for you to see.

If you are ordering a bespoke item, then we have different options for sampling. For bespoke aprons we will always make a sample, occasionally this has to be in a similar fabric to the one you are having, particularly if it’s a Pantone dyed garment.

If you are having clothing made to order, then we will normally be able to offer a stock sample garment for you to see the style and fit. If it is being Pantone dyed, then you will be given lab dips of the fabric so that you can check you are happy with the colour shade.

Embroidered Logo

If you are having embroidery on your uniform then we will set up the logo and run a sample on fabric similar to the clothing you are having. We will then send it out to you in the post, you can see exactly what the embroidery will look like, the size, colours and quality.

Printed Logo

If you are having your logo printed on your workwear, then we will set up a print proof which is a digital document that gives you a mock up of the clothing you are having with the logo on it. It shows you the approximate size and position so you can check you are happy.

Where is started

Traditionally aprons are a piece of clothing that covers the front half of the body to protect the clothing underneath. The word originates from the French word napron, which was a small tablecloth that covered the main table cloth to protect it from food spills.

Aprons today

Today aprons have become about much more than just the protection of clothing, they have become a huge part of the brand identity for businesses, especially in the hospitality and catering sector. Companies order aprons in bulk and then brand them with their logos, they make up part or all of their staff’s uniform.

Bespoke Aprons

At Impact Trading we supply aprons in bulk, these can either be made to order such as Pantone dyed, bespoke style or with specific pockets. By making bespoke you can have branding which is not possible on stock aprons, such as an all over print or an embroidery on a small pocket. Our design team sample the apron before the order goes ahead so we can make sure it is exactly what the customer wants.

Impact Trading have a large range of stock aprons in a wide range of styles and colours, there is often a style which suits our customers. We can arrange samples to be sent out so the customer can check the size, colour and quality. These can then have branding added such as an embroidered logo or a printed slogan.

Bespoke Tote Bags

During and after the pandemic we found that many of our hospitality customers, such as restaurants run by well known chefs, specialist food shops and food brands wanted to increase their range and sell branded products. One of the most popular items is a tote bag in a bespoke design which customers can buy as an add on when they have forgotten to bring a bag or maybe buy as a gift. This can be an additional sales opportunity and a way to advertise the brand.

We produce bags for our customers which are Pantone dyed, printed and embroidered. The bags can have an all over design where they are printed before they are made up or printed with a logo afterwards. Straps can be a feature too by using contrast fabric, leather, webbing, pantone dyed and can even have a print on them.

Because the tote bags are bespoke they can be made to any size and can have any strap length. We have previously made bags in a range of styles for customers. Some have been a standard flat tote and we have also made shaped bags with an enveloped gusseted bottom which gives the bag more of a 3d shape. Pantone Matching Promotional Clothing

Many companies have a specific brand colour/shade which identifies them to their customers. Big, well known brands have colours that are so associated with the brand, that many of the population would recognise the brand without even seeing the logo or the brand name.

Some good examples of this are Coca Cola, who have a recognisable shade of red which is Pantone 2347C.

and Cadbury’s who have a purple shade which is 2685C.

From these examples, you can see how important it is to get the exact colour when producing product packaging, graphics, signage, promotional materials and uniform, so that customers can immediately identify it with the trusted brand that they know.
